In February 1985, Subaru once again stunned the public by introducing the XT luxury sports car to the American market. In June of the same year, the model was introduced in Japan, but under the name Alcyone. In Australia and New Zealand, the car was known as the Vortex. A distinctive feature of this series is a bright, memorable design. The rapid wedge-shaped outlines and smoothed forms made it possible to achieve an unprecedented at that time coefficient of drag - 0.29 Cx. Due to the large glass area of the cabin, the interior space looks spacious and comfortable, which somewhat does not coincide with reality. Overall dimensions are 4450mmx1660mmx1335mm.

The car was equipped with a four-cylinder horizontally opposed 1.8-liter turbocharged engine with a power of 135 hp. Depending on the configuration Alcyone equipped with all-wheel drive all-wheel drive. A special feature of the Subaru Alcyone was an electropneumatic suspension, which allowed to change the amount of ground clearance, and the on-board computer. The car was offered with a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic gearbox. In 1988, the Subaru appeared XT6 modification (in Japan - VX) with a six-cylinder boxer engine of 2.7 liters, 145 hp. at 5200 rpm The electronic traction control system eliminated slippage regardless of the road condition.

The brake system had the Hill Holder program, which did not allow the car to roll back on a steep slope. In addition, Alcyone was completed with the Active Torque Split 4WD system, called ACT-4.
