The first Mazda 626 appeared in 1979 in the US market. It was a small rear wheel drive car equipped with a two-liter four-cylinder SOHC engine with 75 hp. Zip Code 626 is worn by all Mazda vehicles. It included a whole family of 2-liter engines (more precisely, 1998 cc), which differed in the number of valves and the power supply system.
So, in the FE series from 1983 to 1987. Two-liter carburetor engines without a 101 hp catalyst were produced. (index 2000 / FE). In 1986, the FE index was supplemented with a 2.0i turbocharged injection engine (FE-EGI) with a 120 hp catalyst and a five-door GT version.
In the following, in 1987, the Mazda 626 GC also began to install two-liter 12- and 16-valve injector engines with a capacity of 109 and 148 hp, respectively. and eight and twelve carburetor catalyst with a volume of 2 liters and a capacity of 90 and 103 hp respectively. On the eight-valve injector engine with 90 hp the catalyst was not set. All this family went under the symbol FE. In addition to the 2.0 engines, the GCs were equipped with the engines of the old (since 1983) F6 index of 1.6 liters, 80 hp power.

It was supposed to strengthen the former and somewhat footed glory of a strong, reliable, and most importantly inexpensive family car, which the Mazda 626 was originally conceived of. The cars had a transverse engine and front-wheel drive. Global body was subjected to changes.
The roundness disappeared from the exterior, the car acquired the features of a typical European. The smooth contours of the body do not flow into each other as before, but occur at sharply defined angles. The car became 100 mm shorter, 40 mm longer and 30 mm higher. The wagon of this generation has undergone the most dramatic changes in the history of its release. His new silhouette turned out harmonious, modern, rapid, with hints of sportiness. It features a roomy and cozy interior.
Standard equipment of this generation includes: electric front windows and mirrors, four airbags, ABS, height-adjustable steering wheel and built-in immobilizer. In the more expensive versions, an automatic climate control, an anti-skid system and a trip computer showing instant fuel consumption, the rest of gas in kilometers, etc. are installed. In the exterior, the main changes came in the design of the front: the bumper became more powerful, the side moldings were painted in body color, the wide chrome strip over the radiator lining in the form of an elongated sector with an oval Mazda emblem in the middle disappeared. With modest external dimensions for its class (length a little more than 4.5 m), the Mazda 6 has the largest trunk and one of the most spacious salons. Improved environmental friendliness and fuel economy contributes to the electronic exhaust gas recirculation system, whose work is complemented by an electronic anti-skidding system (TCS). Given the speed of rotation of the wheels, the angle of rotation of the steering wheel and engine speed, the system sends commands to the control computer, reducing the fuel supply.
The generation that debuted in 1997 was the last for the Model 626.
