Pony is the first independent model of Hyundai, before that the company was engaged in assembling Ford cars. The first Pony was released in 1974 in collaboration with Mitsubishi Motors. The car was focused on the middle class of society and very quickly gained success in the domestic market of Korea. A year later, the export of Pony begins, large batches went to the Middle East, South America and Africa. In 1985, the second generation of Pony appeared, now compact and front-wheel drive cars.
Pony was a copy of Mitsubishi Colt / Lancer, which was produced in 1984-92. The Hyundai Pony design concept has evolved smoothly from the angular shapes of the first generation to the sleek lines to follow. The second generation Pony was produced in the form of a three or five-door hatchback, as well as a four-door sedan. Interesting, but the back door of the hatchback can open both outside and inside. The luggage compartment does not hit the volume, because of the protruding wheel niches, uneven floor and thick bedding.
But on the hatchbacks, thanks to the back of the rear seat, which is asymmetrically divided and can easily recline completely or in parts, the net volume of the trunk increases markedly. In the sedan this possibility is not provided. The interior of the Pony was made on the principle of a minimum of delights: very simple, concise and angular.
Spacious lounge can not be called, but the driver, whose height does not exceed 1.90 m, can get quite comfortable, but the rear passengers will be closely in the knees. The dashboard with its large dials of a few instruments and the precise operation of the steering column switches is also simply framed and orientally neat. In earlier versions, there were snow levers for controlling the ventilation and heating. Pony was equipped with three different engines: 1.3 liters (59 hp) and two units of 1.5 liters of different power - 72 and 84 hp The engines are located transversely and aggregated with 4-speed manual gearbox, 5-speed - only on request.
Power steering is also installed only on request and then not for all markets.
