Pontiac G6 - car review

In 2003, in Detroit, at the international auto show, concern General Motors presented the conceptual development of the Pontiac G6. The car did not look unnecessarily futuristic, in the guise of brand elements protruded. The sports sedan has got rather soft smooth body lines and a stylish dynamic look. Short overhangs, placed at the corners of the wheel with slightly convex wheel arches, signature front with “licked” shapes, stylish slits of air intakes with integrated fog lights, beautiful rear solution with elegantly designed headlights and four dedicated slits of exhaust pipes, symbolize a sporty sedan .

Great attention during the creation of the Pontiac G6 was paid to the interior trim, which uses high-quality leather in two colors, as well as metal inserts that give a sporty spirit to the interior of the car. The all-wheel drive G6 is equipped with a turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 engine with a power of 285 hp. The engine was planned to be equipped with the system Displacement on Demand, which allows you to use only half of the cylinders with a simple ride and use the rest when full power is needed. This reduces fuel consumption. Plus an independent suspension of all wheels with adjustable ground clearance. The serial Pontiac G6 appeared a year later at NAIAS'2004 in Detroit.

The car is based on GM Epsilon’s front-wheel drive platform (Opel Vectra C, SAAB 9-3 Sport Sedan, Chevrolet Malibu, etc.). The release was adjusted at the plant in Orion (Michigan). Although there was no previous car with such a name in the Pontiac model range, this is not an absolute novelty - the G6 means "Generation 6", or the sixth generation of the Grand Am sedan. For the first time this model appeared on the market 30 years ago, and, despite the prevailing trends in automotive fashion, with each succeeding generation its size decreased. As a result of the last alteration, the exterior of the car has changed so much that it was decided to reject the old name altogether.

The current G6, launched in the second half of 2004, is positioned by the manufacturer as a competitor to the Mazda6, Honda Accord and Nissan Altima models. The car was released in two versions - basic SE and more advanced GT, differing in design, better audio system and 17-inch wheels. The G6 became the epitome of the style of the next Pontiac models. Compared with previous generations, the model has changed a lot. The massive side panels and the large rear spoiler, which have always been the hallmarks of Grand Am, have disappeared. Instead of them - a narrow strip of stamping on the sides and a miniature spoiler integrated into the edge of the trunk lid.

All this is present only on the modification of the G6 GT, the basic version, the G6 SE, is also devoid of these decorations. Compared to previous generations, Grand Am has improved both the quality of materials and the overall interior design. Sports front seats provide excellent lateral support, and a leather-covered steering wheel comfortably fits in your hands. The center console is made of granular plastic that does not reject glare, even in bright sun. The illuminated instrument scales surround the stylish chrome rings. Both versions of the G6, SE and GT, are equipped with the same 6-cylinder engine of 3.5 liters, developing a capacity of 200 liters. from.

In 2006, the Pontiac G6 model range was supplemented with two new versions with coupe bodies and a coupe-convertible with a retractable hardtop. At the heart of these new products is a slightly modified platform of the same sedan, and they are addressed to younger and more active buyers. A hard folding roof turns the car from a closed compartment into a stylish convertible and back in just 30 seconds. This mechanism was developed with the participation of well-known company Karmann, specializing in the construction of open cars. At the same time, in the cabin of both new Pontiac G6 there are places for four passengers.

The series is distinguished by a very progressive chassis design with a rear multi-link suspension with a DSA rudder mechanism, which significantly improved the ride quality while maintaining the smoothness of America’s favorite ride. Due to the rather long wheelbase (2852 mm), the cabin is American-style. The previous version with a 3.5-liter V6 12V (200 hp, 298 Nm) and a 4-speed "automatic" in 2006 received an additional GT index, and the basic version now received a more economical 2.4-liter "four" Ecotec 16V (167 hp, 220 Nm), with which 4-step “automatic” is also aggregated.

In addition, there was a top version of the GTP with a 3.9-liter V6 12V (240 hp, 325 Nm), with which, in addition to an improved 4-speed automatic, they integrate an optional 6-speed manual gearbox. New versions of coupe and hardtop are offered only in GT and GTP versions. The basic version is equipped with variable-effort hydraulic booster (EPS), air conditioning, cruise control, electric windows and mirrors, fog lights, front airbags (since 2006 with a passenger sensor), four electric driver's seat, and a new three-spoke steering wheel. GT performance is different sports suspension, rear spoiler, premium audio system.

The new version of the GTP in addition to 18 inch alloy wheels got automatic climate control (on other versions it is an option). The optional 2006 model list includes traction and side bash systems, the OnStar system and satellite XM radio, now with a common antenna. In April 2006, at the auto show in New York, Pontiac unveiled the G6 with the GXP index.

Externally, the new car differs from the serial G6 with a modified grille, a new front bumper with large air intakes, and the presence of ventilation slots in the hood. The back has a particularly sporty character which is facilitated by chrome pipes and a spoiler. The G6 GXP is a red leather covering the seats and door panels, and the chrome edging of the center console devices is also red. Pontiac G6 GXP, like the base model, has a “2 + 2” landing formula, but is equipped with a 3.9-liter V6 engine, boosted from 240 to 270 horsepower, and a six-speed manual gearbox. In addition, the novelty has received the original 19-inch wheels and a lower suspension.
