Nissan Cube - car review

The first-generation Nissan Cube (Z10 body) was manufactured by the Nissan Motors Company from 1998 to 2002. The car belongs to the class of compact high (more than 160cm) station wagons, has a shape close to cubic and is designed based on the Nissan March K11. Thanks to the successful combination of a spacious cabin, small size and other advantages with a competent pricing policy, the car became a bestseller in its category. The Nissan Cube was produced in both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions.

The first cars were equipped with automatic and variable-speed transmissions, later modifications appeared equipped with modified Hyper-CVT and Hyper-CVT-M6 variators (in the latter case, it is possible to simulate switching of six fixed gears). From time to time, Nissan Moros Co has released special versions of the Nissan Cube, differing in design or equipment from the base model. Some of these versions were developed by the subsidiary Autech: Cube S Limited, Cube Rider, Cube Premium (Autech), Cube Enchante (Autech). In October 2002, the Nissan Cube was introduced in the Z11 series at the Tokyo Motor Show. This is the second generation of the popular car, focused primarily on young buyers.

Practically keeping the same proportions (the wheelbase was increased by 70 mm, and the total length was reduced by 20 mm), the car added significantly in the internal volume - passengers are quite spacious both in the front and in the rear. And the front and rear seats are made in the form of sofas, transforming into chairs, separated by wide armrests. The luggage compartment volume has been significantly increased compared to the previous generation. The design of the car, largely repeating the look of the Nissan Chappo concept presented in 2001 in Geneva, is very unusual.

Corresponding to the name of the model, the body is angular with short overhangs. The back of the car is made asymmetrically, which has improved visibility from the driver’s seat. Especially for the Nissan Cube developed alloy wheels, made in the style of the corresponding "cubic" theme in the design (these wheels are optional equipment). In addition, it is worth noting the fact that the back door, in contrast to the previous generation, is made of a swing door. In technical terms, the car is also completely updated. Now it is available in front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions, equipped with a 1.4-liter CR14DE engine, with a capacity of 98 hp.

(97 in the version with all-wheel drive). It should be noted that the second-generation four-wheel drive Nissan Cube is implemented according to the new e-4WD (electric four-wheel drive) scheme, in which the torque is transmitted to the rear wheels not via the propeller shaft, but from the electric motor installed in the back. This saved the car's weight and internal volume, since there was no need for a high central tunnel for the propeller shaft, but for the sake of the electric motor, it was necessary to abandon the niche for storing the “dokatka”.

As well as for the previous generation, a special version of the car, developed jointly with Autech (a subsidiary of Nissan Motors Co) and dubbed the Nissan Cube Rider, was introduced at the same time with the “simple” one. In 2003, began the release of an extended version of the Nissan Cube, which received its own name Nissan Cube3 (Cube Cubic). Increased by 17 cm wheelbase allowed designers to place in the cabin the third row of seats.
