The world premiere of the smallest member of the BMW family took place in 2004. The 1-series (E87) is a rear-wheel drive five-door hatchback golf class with a longitudinal engine layout. A small, elegant car with an unmistakable, attractive design. Available in Germany.

The key, by the way, does without the battery: the battery is recharged through the slot. The luggage compartment can accommodate 330 liters, and with the rear seat folded down, its volume increases to 1,150 liters. It is noteworthy that the back of the back sofa folds separately. The uniqueness of this model is rear-wheel drive. All competitors have a front. Plus branded symmetric weighing: between the axles, the mass is divided in a ratio of 50/50.
In its class, the BMW 1-Series is the only car whose engine is located longitudinally, thereby providing the car with a low center of gravity and optimum traction. In 2005, the gasoline engine was replenished with a 3.0 liter engine with a capacity of 265 hp. The basic version of the BMW 1-series is equipped with a six-speed manual gearbox. The optional six-speed automatic transmission provides comfortable driving, while maintaining high vehicle maneuverability. It combines maximum torque at the start with lower revs and lower energy consumption when driving at high speeds. Active driving fans can change gears manually using Steptronic.
The BMW 1-series is equipped with a whole range of active safety systems, including DSC (Dynamic Stability Control), DTC (Dynamic Traction Control), DBC (Dynamic Brake Control) and electronic differential lock EDL. In addition to standard airbags, upper airbags are included as standard equipment. As an option, the car can be equipped with “sporty” seats with adjustable backrest width, acoustic “parking sensors” and bi-xenon headlights.
The list also includes a combination with the Bluetooth system, the ability to access without a key, as well as voice-activated radio and navigation systems. The world premiere of the BMW 1-series in the three-door version of the body, with new engines, changes in the exterior design and a newly-designed attractive interior, was held during the opening of the international motor show in Geneva in March 2007. Special attention deserves the line of power units. The powerful four-cylinder gasoline engines use the Double Vanos valve operation system, Valvetronic technology and valve positioning system.
Diesel engine only one 2.0 liters (120d) / 177 hp It is surprisingly “responsive” at low revs and provides outstanding performance and torque. The entire engine block is made of aluminum, and this has reduced its weight by as much as 20 kg. In the standard version, the 4-cylinder diesel engine is equipped with a Brake Energy Regeneration system with an Auto Start Stop function (using braking energy through regeneration).
With all the engine options in the base BMW 1-series is equipped with a six-speed manual gearbox. As an option, the engines can be combined with a six-speed gearbox, including the Steptronic function. Appearance has become even more energetic and athletic.
The outlines of the headlights on the bumper side acquired a new shape, the edging of the headlights became darker, the air intake in the lower part of the front apron became wider, the spoiler hem was reinforced, a new decorative trim was installed. The car in the three-door performance has lost only ten pounds of weight. At the same time, the dimensions of the 3-door version do not differ at all from the sizes of the 5-door version. Thus, the rear passengers are not worse. Compared to its predecessor, there are almost no changes in the cabin.
True, facilitated the landing-disembarking of the driver and front passenger, because the doors have become much wider. The refusal of the rear doors did not affect visibility. It has become even a little better due to the larger glass area. The lower part of the front panel and door trim have undergone significant processing. The inner element of the door panel between the sill line and the armrest has received a new, elegant shape and is now made of the same material as the central cloth of the seat upholstery.
The pockets and the glove box, which are built into the upholstery of the doors, are now in harmony with the lines of the interior thanks to their gently curved shapes and, moreover, have become more spacious. The debut of the BMW 1 Series coupe was held at the International Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2007. The BMW automobile concern has chosen a plant in Leipzig (Germany) to assemble a 1-series coupe. The coupe will be the third model coming off the assembly line of this enterprise. Now there is already produced three-door hatchback 1 series and 3 series sedan.
The BMW 1 Series Coupe is noticeably different from the competition with its long front end, rear-facing cabin and short rear end. The exterior will please the gaze with dynamic surfaces, expressive shoulder line, developed wheel arches and long doors without frames. A feature of this coupe is rear-wheel drive and 4 seats for passengers in the cabin according to the scheme 2 + 2.
In 2008, the light saw the compact four-seater convertible (E88), developed on the basis of the BMW 1-series. The cabriolet became the fourth representative of the BMW 1-series model range after five- and three-door hatchbacks, as well as a coupe. The design concept reflects the characteristics of the brand: an elegant silhouette, powerful wheel arches, a pronounced shoulder line. The flat sill line and long distance from the driver and front passenger to the windshield provide a unique driving experience from a BMW convertible. The car is equipped with a soft top equipped with an electro-hydraulic drive.
In the standard set top can be ordered in black or dark brown. An additional version called Moonlight Black, it is made of anthracite fabric with woven shiny metal threads, iridescent silver in the sun. The drive of the convertible top is activated at speeds up to 40 km / h and opens or closes within 22 seconds. Elements of the interior, as expected, are made of very pleasant-looking and tactile materials. The salon can optionally be trimmed with an infrared reflective skin coating, which significantly reduces surface heating from direct sun exposure. For this thanks to the technology of Sun Reflective Technology, thanks to which the skin reflects, rather than absorbs the sun's rays.
The climate control system was further refined, exclusively for driving in an open-closed cab mode. While driving in normal mode, climate control sensors read information from sensors located inside the cabin, but when switching to open driving mode, reading occurs from external temperature and solar activity sensors in order to adjust the system to comfortable ventilation. The trunk, of course, is not impressive in size, but when the roof is raised, its volume is 305 liters, and with an open top it is smaller - 260 liters. The functionality of the cabin enhances the optional sunroof in the back of the rear seat.
A unique opportunity for this class of cars to load lengthy items into the cabin. The convertible, like most BMW cars, is equipped with the BMW EfficientDynamics system, which makes it possible to significantly reduce fuel consumption and the amount of harmful emissions into the atmosphere. There is a special indicator on the instrument panel that tells you when you need to switch up or down to reduce fuel consumption. The range of engines is extensive and includes four gasoline engines ranging from 143 to 306 hp. The most modest petrol version of the 118i has a confident acceleration dynamics: from zero to 100 km / h it accelerates in 9.3 s, with the maximum speed reaching 210 km / h.
The most practical version of the 125i with a 3.0-liter 218-horsepower gasoline engine. The flagship BMW 135i with a six-cylinder in-line engine and two turbines fires up to "a hundred" in just 5.6 seconds, allowing you to accelerate to an artificially limited 250 km / h. The base car is equipped with a six-speed manual gearbox. As an option for all versions of the proposed six-step "automatic" with the possibility of manual mode Steptronic.
All cars in the base are already equipped with electric power steering Electric Power Steering with variable force and gear ratios. As an option, the Active Steering system is offered, which makes the steering response even more precise. Despite the rear-wheel drive, the car has excellent balance and sharp handling, and the built-in DSC stabilization system does not allow the car to get out of the driver’s control, even on slippery roads. The cabriolet is equipped with an inversion sensor, which, in case of detection of an inevitable rollover, pre-tension the belts and unfolds two tubular frames behind the rear headrests.
The front pillar and windshield structure are also reinforced to give extra protection. The basic equipment includes two more front and two side airbags, mounted in the front head restraints. The debut of the second generation BMW 1-series was held at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2011. The first public was presented five-door hatchback. The size of the car compared with the previous generation increased slightly. The length increased by 85 mm (4324 mm), width by 17 mm (1765 mm), wheelbase became wider by 30 mm (2690 mm). The front track has added 51 millimeters, and the rear - by 72 mm.
The height did not change - 1421 mm. The increase in size allowed to expand the internal space of the hatchback. The cabin has become 21 mm freer in the legs of the rear passengers, and the luggage compartment has increased by 30 liters and now stands at 360 liters. With the rear seats folded, its volume increases to 1,200 liters. The rear seat folds in a 40/20/40 ratio. The cabin has a large number of compartments for things, shelves and cupholders. Designers and designers of the company tried to preserve the existing design as much as possible, but at the same time make the car better and more interesting.
The main emphasis in the exterior is on headlights, a “muscular” bumper and wide wheel arches. The feeling of compactness and sportiness creates a long hood, a large wheelbase and a sloping roofline. For those potential buyers of the model who want to stand out on the road, the Bavarians have prepared two special versions of the hatchback - Sport Line and Urban Line. The first one in the stream of “neighbors” along the conveyor is easy to distinguish by the vertical slats of the grille, horizontal slats in the front bumper, the rear bumper cover and the “cap” of the exhaust pipe, made in glossy black.
The Urban Line version, in turn, differs from other modifications of the new product with the same elements, but this time they are painted with white enamel. For each of these options you need to pay extra. The Urban Line version, in addition to the exterior, differs from the stock car also by upholstering the interior with a combination of leather and fabric, “casting”, a leather steering wheel and inserts for acrylic glass of white and black colors in the interior.
The Sport Line version can be distinguished from other versions of the Track fabric interior with red stitching, 16-inch light-alloy wheels of a different design than the Urban Line version, the same leather steering wheel and black polished inserts on the dashboard, center console and doors. The updated interior is distinguished by a new center console, which has become noticeably larger. The center console can be supplemented with a retractable color LCD display of the latest generation iDrive optional system. In general, the quality of trim materials has increased, and attention to detail has increased.
For the first time on the BMW 1-series engines of a new generation, equipped with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, are used. The buyer will be able to choose between 1.6-liter petrol engines: BMW 116i with 136 hp. and the BMW 118i with 170 hp. Modified diesel engines are also available: the 2.0-liter BMW 116d with 116 hp, the BMW 118d with 143 hp and the BMW 120d with 184 hp.
A little later, a special version of the diesel engine BMW 116d EfficientDynamics Edition, 116 hp. and a 1.6-liter volume, equipped with a new fuel-saving technology, which allows to reduce CO2 emissions into the atmosphere to 99 g / km. A six-speed manual transmission is available for all modifications, as well as a new eight-speed automatic transmission.
All engines are equipped with a start / stop system that allows you to automatically turn off the engine during short stops and also automatically and very quickly start it. This will significantly reduce fuel consumption. Significantly improved comfort and unique handling characteristics are provided by rear-wheel drive, longitudinally mounted engines, perfectly balanced weight distribution and the use of advanced technologies in the undercarriage. BMW 1 Series 2012 is equipped with a front double-joint suspension with strut struts, five-link rear suspension, as well as an exceptionally accurate steering mechanism with an electromechanical amplifier, free from the influence of the drive.
As an option, adjustable sports steering is offered. The standard equipment of the new BMW 1-Series includes the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system (it includes, in particular, ABS and Stability Control System), an on-board computer, a tire damage indicator, an engine start and stop button, an immobilizer central locking , electromechanical power steering, two-way adjustable steering wheel, air conditioning, movable center armrest of the front seats, heated front seats, head unit audio system with radio and CD play telem, moldings on the roof in body color, fog lights and heated mirrors. Security is traditionally high.
